No one knows your kid better than you do!
Are you worried about how to educate your child with special needs? But you know in your heart it’s just what your kid needs and you can do it? You’re right! You’ve got this!
You know that your child is struggling to learn and that public school isn’t the right fit for your child right now. You know what your child likes. You know what seems to work best for them. And you know what doesn’t work. (Being held in from recess DOES. NOT. WORK!) You want to provide your child the best possible education but you worry about your ability to meet all of their needs.
Does it seem like they just don’t “get it” no matter what you try? Does it make you want to cry just thinking about it? Do you worry that your kid won’t learn 4th grade math until they’re 21?
Your child is struggling and needs targeted help. I have been teaching children with special needs for more than 15 years in public schools and private homes, and been honored with multiple awards. That’s hundreds of kids with 12 of the 13 qualifying IDEA disabilities (I haven’t worked with Deaf-Blind children). I have not had the same educational plan for any two of them. I firmly believe that all children can learn and I am passionate about helping children who are struggling, ideally before their self-esteem suffers!
All children learn at their own pace (which usually varies based on the day, the material, what they had for lunch, etc). All children learn in their own style and struggle in a distinctly unique way. All children also have strengths. And these strengths need to be seen and capitalized on! If your child can focus super well when playing mine craft, let’s use that!
Will any “special education” curriculum work for all children with special needs, or even almost all?
In my experience, the curriculum is much less important than targeting the very specific areas in which a child is struggling and working through that struggle using the child’s strengths. Every child is unique and will do best with a unique education with all of their strengths and challenges accounted for.
Let’s team up to use all that you know about your child and all that I know about how kids learn to create a high quality education for your unique child, in your own home using any curricula that you choose.
I try to recommend free resources over paid ones as often as I can (although there are a few tools that I think are worth investing in). I will also let you know if there are concerns being presented that may require an outside specialist such as an OT, speech therapist, or developmental optometrist.
I have no poker face (it can actually be embarrassing how easy I am to read). I will always be honest with you, whether it’s to tell you to back off and let your kid breathe, to step it up because only reading the back of the Cheerios box once a week isn’t enough, or to tell you that I do not have the type of expertise that you need (and then I’ll help you find someone who can help).
Are you ready to see your child light up and beam with pride after solving a math problem?
Ready to see your kid read the plaque next to the painting at the art museum out loud?
Ready to hear them tell you about a fascinating article they just read about evidence of another planet in the solar system?
Are you ready for your child to truly learn from the education YOU are providing?
Let’s get started!
